Before Test Day

Schedule Your Test

Register at faa.psiexams.com or call 1-844-704-1487. Create an account, select "Unmanned Aircraft General – Small (UAG)" as your exam, and choose a location and time.

Checklist

  • Study the official FAA Remote Pilot Study Guide cover-to-cover
  • Practice sectional chart reading (SkyVector.com)
  • Decode METAR/TAF examples daily (aviationweather.gov)
  • Take practice tests — aim for consistent 85%+ scores
  • Know the five hazardous attitudes and antidotes cold
  • Memorize core limits: 400 ft AGL, 100 mph, 8-hour alcohol rule, BAC 0.04%
  • Confirm test center location, parking, and travel time
  • Get a good night's sleep before test day

What to Bring to the Test Center

Government-issued photo ID — This is mandatory. Driver's license, passport, or military ID. The name on your ID must match your PSI registration.

Additional items:

  • PSI confirmation/registration email
  • Your FAA Tracking Number (FTN) — obtained from the IACRA website before test day
  • Glasses/contacts if needed for the vision test (not always required)
  • Basic calculator (if allowed — check with test center; the on-screen calculator is usually provided)

Do NOT Bring

Cell phones, smart watches, bags, notes, or study materials. Test centers require you to lock up personal items. Pockets are emptied before entering the testing room.

During the Test

  1. Use all your time. You have 2 hours for 60 questions — that's 2 minutes per question. Don't rush.
  2. Review the Airman Knowledge Testing Supplement when provided. Familiarize yourself with the figures.
  3. Read each question carefully. Many have distractors that sound correct but miss a key detail (e.g., AGL vs. MSL).
  4. Use the mark feature (if available) to flag questions you're unsure about. Review them at the end.
  5. Eliminate obviously wrong answers first. With 3 choices, you can often remove one immediately.
  6. Watch for units: MSL vs. AGL, statute miles vs. nautical miles, mph vs. knots.
  7. Sectional chart questions: Take your time. Identify the airspace type first, then answer.
  8. METAR/TAF questions: Decode each element step-by-step. Don't guess.

After Passing the Test

Congratulations!

You'll receive your Knowledge Test Report (with your Embossed Test ID) at the test center. This is valid for 24 calendar months.

IACRA Application Steps

  1. Go to iacra.faa.gov
  2. Log in with your FTN and password
  3. Start a new application: Select "Remote Pilot" → "Initial" → "Other Path"
  4. Enter your Knowledge Test Exam ID (from your test report)
  5. Complete the application and submit
  6. A TSA background check is performed automatically
  7. After TSA clearance, you'll receive an email with a link to print your Temporary Remote Pilot Certificate (valid for 120 days)
  8. Your permanent plastic certificate arrives by mail in 6–8 weeks

Certificate Currency — Recurrent Training

Your Remote Pilot Certificate is valid for 24 calendar months. To maintain currency, you must complete the FAA's free online recurrent training course every 24 months. There is no re-test required — just the online training.

The recurrent training is available at: faasafety.gov

You do NOT need to retake the initial knowledge test unless your certificate has been expired for more than 24 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most test-takers report it as moderately challenging. The pass rate is approximately 85–90%. Consistent practice test scores of 85%+ indicate strong readiness.

You must wait 14 calendar days before retaking the test. There is no limit on the number of retakes. You must pay the testing fee each time.

Yes. Part 61 certificated pilots who have completed a flight review within the last 24 months can take the free online training course (Part 107 Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems ALC-677) instead of the knowledge test. They must still apply through IACRA for the Remote Pilot Certificate.

If you fail to complete recurrent training within 24 months, your certificate is no longer current. If expired for more than 24 months, you must retake the initial knowledge test.

Part 107 governs all civil (non-recreational) sUAS operations. This includes commercial work like photography, inspection, surveying, and any flight that is not purely recreational under 49 U.S.C. §44809 (the Exception for Limited Recreational Operations).

The test structure remains the same: 60 questions, 2 hours, 70% to pass. Content is periodically updated to reflect regulatory changes. As of 2025–2026, the key updates include Remote ID requirements, operations over people (Categories 1–4), and night operations without waiver. Always check the current ACS for the latest knowledge areas.
